Training with a credible driving school provides you with the confidence that the teachings you will receive throughout your course duration is at a minimum of the accrediting body standard, such as the DVSA, RLI and JAUPT, when undertaking your HGV course and required Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training.

What training is included?

Lorry Driver Training includes learning to manoeuvre a 7.5 tonne van, Category C rigid or Category C+E articulated lorry. By booking your course with us, you will be taught by experienced instructors at your chosen training depot. For example, if you were completing you LGV course at our Portsmouth location, which can be found within the Ackworth road industrial estate, you will be training at one of our approved DVSA centres. We are at the forefront of safe and accredited driver training.

Our intensive crash courses are suitable for novice students, through to experienced rigid (Category C) lorry drivers, who are looking to upskill to a Class 1 (Category C+E) HGV truck licence.

Those looking to join the logistics industry, who is currently licenced to only drive a car, can complete one of our tailored fast track car to artic training packages and go from a car, straight to a class 1 licence, surpassing the Class 2 training and test. So where will you be driving during your training? Again, using our Portsmouth depot as an example, let’s discuss the training routes.

Local Training Routes

HGV training with TTUK at our Portsmouth school will require you to start by learning your vehicle, and understanding the daily checks you must undertake, and will progress to providing you with the practical experience by getting hands on with the efficient operation and safe manoeuvring of the Category of vehicle that you are training for.

You will likely travel past Hilsea Lido, King George Playing Field, and down through the M27. Alternatively, you may drive down Eastern Road, and drive through the Cosham area. This will require you to make wise decisions in your route planning for best time efficiency and the practicality of the logistical route whilst on the road.
You won’t only drive around Portsmouth, as you will gain experience manoeuvring in surrounding areas too. From Fareham and Gosport, down to across the Solent, and through and around Wickham.

You will also practice on the typical roads used throughout a vast majority of the tests conducted by the DVSA examiner. This is sometimes started on James Callaghan Drive, going up past BAE Systems Radar Station, also known as Portsdown Technology Park, situated on Portsdown Hill.

You may also head down the B2177, Southwick Road. As well as other roads, such as Wallington Way, Fareham Road, Gosport Road, and Wickham Road.
You will have the ability to drive the vehicle, and also get to see the landmarks in and around the Portsmouth area, while training to drive either a Cat C1, Cat C or Cat CE vehicle.

Once your instructor is confident in your ability to operate, manoeuvre and safely drive the vehicle on the road, you will then move on to taking your driving test. Once again, under the assumption that you are training from our DVSA approved Portsmouth depot, your test will be conducted from our test centre by a DVSA examiner. This means you get to complete your test from familiar surroundings where you have trained.

DVSA approved centres

Our Portsmouth depot is a DVSA approved test centre, so your training experience to become a lorry driver is conducted at the high standards defined by the DVSA to help ensure you have the confidence and experience to pass and get your HGV licence.

We believe it is wise to complete your on-road training with a driving school that has their own fleet of well-maintained vehicles too. This means that you can be sure that the vehicle you are learning in is in good condition, tidy, and reliable.

To conduct your practical 3b on-road driving test, you must first successfully pass your 3a off-road test, with one of our in house DVSA accredited (3a) examiners. We supply our own dedicated DVSA approved 3a off-road training area. This allows you to complete your 3a reverse training and test in a controlled environment.

Cost of a HGV licence

While the price will vary depending on the Vehicle licence category you wish to obtain, we will break down these costs as best as we can for you below. But we believe that no two students are the same, so your unique requirements can impact the costs, so please bear this in mind.

Trailer Training UK offer comprehensive packages to help with the struggles that the UK are going through. With inflation and tax rises, we know that cash is as important as ever right now, but so is investing in your career.

So, if you are looking to gain your C1 licence in order to drive up to a 7.5 tonne vehicle, then you will be required to complete a full Category C1 driver training course, which start from £920. So if you’re looking for a course which is under £1,000, then we’ve got you covered.

Alternatively, if you are looking to gain your Category C licence to drive a rigid lorry, completing our standard 5-days of training with an experienced instructor and using our vehicles starts at just £1,175.

However, many of our students see the value in going straight from a car licence, to a Category C+E lorry licence. The reason for this is because once you have obtained your CE licence, you automatically gain the Category C1 and Category C entitlements.

Our complete articulated lorry driver training package, at our Portsmouth depot, is conducted over 10 days as an intensive course. For example, Our Car to C+E 10-day crash course, which includes medical & provisional application, Modules 1 & 2 theory, and Module 4 Practical tests costs just £3,413.
